Now
P.A.W.N.
The P.A.W.N. Project -
Parole Aged Women Now - is an effort to focus
public and governmental attention on the plight of
ELDERLY WOMEN TRAPPED INSIDE the PRISON SYSTEM. These women are OLD,
SICK, and FRAIL, posing NO THREAT
to ANYONE in the COMMUNITY.
The PAWN Project has focused attention on TWO
(2) women whose situation is
representative
of the many elderly inmates in the Prison System:
Helen Loheac - 86-years-old
Myrtle Green - 78-years-old
There are more than 9.000 inmates over the age of 55
currently incarcerated in the California
prison system.
The oldest of these is a 95-year-old man who has been found suitable
for
parole six (6) times, yet his parole dates have been rescinded because of
the Governor's
"Public
Safety" concerns.
Helen Loheac, who is 85, was denied parole
because of "Inadequate employment
Plans."
Elderly and infirm inmates cost at least $70,000 per year to incarcerate,
which is only partially due to their illnesses and disability.
The salaries of the prison guards who accompany them to the hospital
and other off site medical appointments are a huge part
of the expense of imprisoning the elderly.
Click on Helen's and Myrtle's names. Please sign the letters
requesting the release of these
women and send those letters to the governor's office. We hope to
obtain 30,000 signed letters
to send the message that the elderly and infirm do not belong in prison.
Helen Loheac
Myrtle Green
